Issue 3: Wallpaper Wednesday - Subaru Impreza WRC S9
Petter Solberg may be one of the most friendliest chaps the world of motorsport has ever seen and in 2003 he claimed the World Rally Championship on Wales Rally GB, the vehicle that steered him to victory was the iconic Subaru Impreza WRC S9. This would be the last championship victory from a driver that wasn’t a Frenchman called Sebastien for well over a decade. Citroen also took home the manufacturers title in 2003, but Solberg’s drivers title would also be the last from Subaru before they withdrew from the WRC at the end of the 2008 season.
Being from the UK and also having been attending rallies since the age of around 3 (cheers, Dad) the clubman rally scene has been blessed with a number of ex-world rally cars making their way down into privateers hands. With the original Subaru WRT cars manufactured by Prodrive in Oxfordshire, it was easier for these cars start competing at national level around the UK – the same can be said for Ford’s World Rally Cars and M-Sort based in Cumbria. You only need look at an entry list on a rally in the UK and you are bound to see an ex-world rally car seeded in the top half; there is also a high chance of this being a Subaru!
According to eWRC, there were a total of 21 S9s manufactured by Prodrive, with 16 of those being ex-factory cars. Chassis #16 was the magic car that Petter drove to victory on Wales Rally GB and afterwards the car made its way into private hands in Italy, San Marino and the UK with the last competitive entry came in 2009 on the Cheviot Stages with David Mann behind the wheel. The great thing is that the car has kept the same plate from its integral event, S600 WRT.
So, in a similar fashion to Issue #1 of Wallpaper Wednesday and the Mitsubishi Lancer WRC05 (read it here), we created a negative space design on Petter’s championship winning car.
