Three time FIA Champion (2003 WRC, 2014 & 2015 WRX), Petter Solberg is hanging up his overalls at the end of 2019 after his Farewell Tour, which will take him across multiple disciplines from Gymkhana to Hill Climbs. Stop one on the Farewell tour was at Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this month, where he took the Volkswagen Polo R World Rallycross car up the hill and met up with some old friends including his 2003 Subaru Impreza World Rally Car on the Goodwood Special stage. Petter was joined by his son Oliver at Goodwood who wa sin the car that took his dad to back-to-back World Rallycross Titles, the trusty Citroen DS3. While Petter took the accolade for the fastest rally car up the Goodwood Hill climb, Oliver wooed the crowd with his boisterous driving style, really pushing the DS3 to the limit. All in all a great day out for the Solberg family.
Petter Solberg announced his retirement from the top level of the sport in an announcement video on Facebook, and has already revealed some of his plans. Goodwood Festival of Speed has always been the intended starting point and then moving onto the Norges Råeste Bakkeløp Hill Climb in Norway, then to Poland for the Gymkhana Grid. During the announcement video told us there would be more events to come this year and hinted that there is a ‘special one’. This got us thinking… we do not think Goodwood Festival of Speed will be Petter Solberg’s last time in a rally car on UK soil - find out why below.
The 2003 World Rally Championship was the final year before the all conquering dominance of French Duo, Citroen and Sebastien Loeb. However the 2003 Drivers Championship was wrapped up in style on the final event of the season on Wales Rally GB with Petter Solberg taking overall honours finishing 1 minute ahead of Sebasiten Loeb, winning the rally and the title by just 1 point with Loeb finishing runner up. This landmark day gave Petter his first FIA Championship and we have reason to believe that he will be back to the famous stages of Wales Rally GB this year. Having already had a handful of outings in the Volkswagen Polo GTi R5 as well as Oliver also competing in a Polo R5, don’t rule out a comeback on the Welsh forest tracks as the curtain call to Petter Solberg's Farewell tour.
With the possibility of Petter’s final round at the top level of motorsport happening in the United Kingdom, we would like to thank Mr Hollywood for the thrills, smiles, excitement and being an all round nice guy. Whether you are looking for an autograph, a photo, a game of poker or maybe even just a chat, Petter will always have the time for you and has set a truly fantastic example for anyone making their way up the motorsport ladder. You really will be missed.
